Extended Care and Short-Term Care

Medicare only covers 20 days at a 100% at skilled nursing level. Skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services are provided on a continuous, daily basis, in a skilled nursing facility. Skilled Nursing includes a semi-private room, meals, skilled nursing and rehabilitative services, and other services and supplies (only after a 3-day minimum impatient hospital stay for a related illness or injury not including the day of discharge) for up to 100 day in a benefit period. To get care in a skilled nursing facility, your doctor must certify that you need daily care like intravenous injections or physical therapy. Medicare doesn't cover long term care, intermediate or custodial care in this setting.

The qualifications for Medicare to cover Skilled Nursing Care are:

· You have Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and have days of Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) coverage left in you benefit period. You get 100 days of Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) coverage per benefit period.

· You have an inpatient stay of 3 consecutive days or more (a "qualifying stay"), counting the day of inpatient admission to the hospital, but not the day of discharge, before being admitted to the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF).

· The Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) is certified by Medicare

· You begin getting covered care in the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) within a short time (generally, 30 days) after discharge from the qualifying 3-day hospital stay.

· Your doctor has ordered the services you need for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care. These services must meet the following criteria:

- Require the skills of professional personnel
- Be needed on a daily basis
- Be a type of care that can be provided only by a Skilled Nursing Facility(SNF) on an impatient basis
- Be needed for a "hospital-related condition" (that is, one of the conditions that was treated during the qualifying 3-day hospital stay, even if not the main reason for the stay), or be needed for a condition that arose in the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) while you were being treated there for a hospital-related condition.
- Be reasonable and necessary.
